September was a month of transition, with Virgo season as well as the retrogrades of Mercury and Venus drawing to a close. October holds a similar, yet still different, invitation with eclipse season and Pluto retrograde coming to an end. Also, this week’s transit of Mercury into Libra is one of the more supportive movements of the month and holds us with gentle balance and rationale.

Mercury Enters Libra

If you’ve been observing astrological transits for quite some time, you may have noticed that Mercury is never far from the Sun. In fact, the planet cannot be more than 28 degrees, or one zodiac sign, away from the star. So it’s no surprise that a little more than a week after the Sun moved into balanced and beauty-driven Libra, Mercury will join it in the air sign on October 4, 2023.

According to astrology, Mercury is our mind. It is the way we communicate, including the tone, energy, and intentions transmitted through our voice to the receptive ears of another. It is the way we take in information from our environment, processing sounds, images, words, and more. It is how we learn and what kind of topics we find interesting as they pass through our thoughts. It is the very way that we perceive reality.

In mythology, Mercury was considered an alchemist, which continues to remind us of the power in the mind, thoughts, beliefs, and words. It is the way in which we perceive, process, and create narratives and stories about our reality that seem to really shape it, or at least, shape our experience of it. And so as Mercury shifts into a new sign, the lens through which we see and experience our world, both inner and outer, also shifts with it.

According to astrology, Libra is here to promote peace. It is here to find and create balance in all, and in that balance, arrive at a state of harmony and beauty. It is also an air sign, showing us that its primary mode of functioning and processing of reality happens through the mind, just like Mercury. Libra is also the first sign of the zodiac that brings us into partnership with another, whether it be romantic, friendship, business, or something else.

Libra is human centered, bringing us back to the knowing that not only is life richer, more joyful, and beautiful when in collaboration with others, but it is through another that we can more profoundly expand ourselves, our perceptions, our narratives of reality, our self-identity, and much more.

Mercury also rules the nervous system, as we know how deeply and profoundly the world in your minds shape the felt experience within your body, and so it is throughout these few weeks that we are gifted with an opportunity to step into peace and beauty, bringing it into our bodies and soothing our nervous systems.

Mercury is changeable. It loves to move, shapeshift, shed, and expand. Mercury is here to try on different outfits and see the world from as many viewpoints as it possibly can. It knows that as we explore these many beliefs, truths, experiences, and viewpoints, we expand ourselves and our notions of what it is to be alive.

Libra has a gift of experiencing through the eyes of the other. It balances every perceived truth with its perceived opposite and finds balance within it.
While Mercury moves through Libra, it is through another’s eyes that your mind is sated. Through listening to stories and learning from experiences, having parts of you that were previously unseen mirrored back to you, and balancing others’ perspectives and beliefs with your own.

Your Invitation

“Mercury governs our thoughts and perceptions and these can limit us,” wrote astrologer Howard Sasportas. “But Mercury also gives us the ability to have new thoughts and perceptions which free or expand us; and to top it off, Mercury is the part of us capable of becoming aware that we can change our perceptions in this way.”

This week asks, how can you bring harmony into your thoughts and perceptions and, therefore, into your life?

Hold space for strong insights by experiencing life through the eyes of another, whether through conversing with someone, reading an autobiography, listening to stories, or witnessing yourself from a different lens. Similarly, you can make space for insights by indulging in calming practices including meditating, immersing yourself in beautiful atmospheres, walking through an art gallery, writing poetry, and more.

This week is a time to bring a sense of balance and ease to your own mind. Knowing that your mind shapes the experience of your lived reality, there is an offering within this transit to bring balance to your thoughts so that you can bring balance and ease to your life.
